Why Maria Borges Made History In Victoria’s Secret Show
Maria Borges has been in Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show for three years, but you might not recognize her this time. She’s been wearing her hair long and wavy for the previous shows but this time she decided to ditch the extensions and go with her natural hair.
She talked with her agent she wanted to walk in the Victoria’s Secret show with her natural hair. She was surprised and very happy when they accepted.
This was a shock because the show has been known for a certain appearances of the models and an afro definitely was not something that existed in the show before Maria Borges.
We can assume she is following in the footsteps of Ajuma Nasenyana who was the first black model to walk with her natural hair with a short, almost shaved hair in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show of 2006.
What Maria Borges is an amazing example, because it shows that a model can take a stance in an industry built on unrealistic standards of beauty. Even though Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show has a long way to go before reflecting “real” women, Maria Borges walking in her natural short hair is a good place to start as any.
She also has advice to other women, telling them to be strong. She says it’s all about confidence; being you and telling others you are beautiful without hair and make-up. This definitely seems to have worked in her case.
Her taking a stand in Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, one of the most recognized and influential fashion events of the year shows that being strong definitely pays off. She not only influenced so many women on standards of beauty but she also showed how one women’s stance on one single oppression, can effect so many in the long run.
