Real Life Iron Man Wayan Sumardana
We were all obsessed with Iron Man and his charisma and cool attitude when we first saw the movie. But what was one of the most impressive part about Iron Man was that he actually built himself and his hero identity. Iron Man’s knowledge of technology was definitely fascinating but the bottom line was that he needed to build Iron Man to stay alive.
This is certainly the case for Wayan Sumardana who is the real-life Iron Man. Wayan Sumardana is a 31-year-old Indonesian man living in a small village in Bali and he lost feeling in his left arm six months ago. The doctors and the Shaman’s couldn’t figure out what caused this and he was left with an arm that did not work. What was the biggest problem for Sumardana was that his work as a welder and a repairman was not a possibility anymore and he soon run out of money to support himself and his family.
Few months after he lost feeling in his left arm, he knew he had to do something to get back to work and thats when he built his “bionic arm”. The arm he built was made of scrap metals around his house, a lithium battery, gear wheels, dynamo cables and some more electronic components.
The arm acts from his brain signals with a ‘signal receiver headband’ and Sumardana says its like a lie detector reading a persons mind. With the help of his ‘bionic arm’ Sumardana is now able to work his previous job although he says it takes a lot of concentration to work the arm and after a while he gets dizzy.
More than being able to work his previous job, Wayan Sumardana also has become a local and international celebrity. For the villagers his tale is and of determination and ability to solve crisis with his knowledge. As for the international media Sumardana is the real life Iron Man.
