Pirelli Calendar, shot by famous photographers and including partially or completely naked supermodels in sexy poses, has been around for 50 years now. But we’re at a breaking point in history where sexual objectification of women is coming to an end. Even Playboy decided to end nudity in their pages! Pirelli must have gotten the hint because this year the women in their calendar are not there because of their measurements but because of their resumes.
The Pirelli Calendar 2016 focuses on the female heroes of out time, they call it “shero”. All the women in the calendar this year are the living proof of female empowerment. Even the photographer Annie Leibovitz is a highly successful artist in her field.
The Pirelli Calendar 2016 models are; Artist Yoko Ono, singer Patti Smith, tennis player Serena Williams, writer Fran Lebowitz, actress Amy Schumer, blogger Tavi Gevinson, film director Ava DuVernay, model and philanthropist Natalia Vodianova, art collector Agnes Gund, producer Kathleen Kennedy, business woman Mellody Hobson, artist Shirin Neshat, and actress Yao Chen were the chosen ones.
However, there is debate on this feminist turn of the Pirelli Calendar 2016, that it might be the exploitation of a popular social trend. But after 50 years of exploiting the female body, this is does not come off too bad. And the fact that a popular social trend advocating feminism made this impact is a sign that we’re headed in the right direction.
Also the calculated decision of the change in Pirelli Calendar 2016 is not only the result of social media trends. It is an economic one as well. With women as consumers in their market, Pirelli could not afford to have naked women on the walls of their garages.
Another interesting fact about the calendar is most of the women who got the invitation to be a part of it were not thrilled about the idea. However seeing that Annie Leibovitz was going to be their photographer, they decided to be included to help Leibovitz support the idea about female beauty, style and empowerment.
