Two very famous Brazilian actors kiss each other to protest homophobia and machismo. The very high-profile actors Bruno Gagliasso and João Vicente de Castro kissed each other in Brazil’s GQ Men of the Year awards. The kiss created a frenzy in Brazilian social media.
Both actors are heterosexual men, however they were very displeased with the approach towards homosexuals in the country. Bruno shared a photo of the kiss in his Instagram with a caption that translated as; this photograph is for all the ‘macho card-carriers, hypocritical and prejudiced’, to show there’s nothing wrong with showing ‘our affection and love’ for another man. He also said that he wanted to use the photo in order to change the general public’s view on what it means to be ‘macho’. So the actors were not only protesting homophobia but also the nation’s view on masculinities. Bruno has also stated before that the ‘macho’ masculine identity portrayed on television has negative effects on both straight and LGBT Brazilians.
Although homosexual marriage was legalised in Brazil in 2014, the situation is far from perfect. The crimes toward LGBT people in the country is extremely high. Over 200 people were killed last year in Brazil because of hate crimes. Thirty-five percent were transgender, fifty-nine were homosexual men and four precent were homosexual women. So even though the state seems to be taking positive steps towards homosexual rights, the public has a long way to go before Brazil could be considered a gay-friendly country. The fact that two very famous Brazilian actors kiss in live television is a great step towards equality.
The photo has received over 80 thousand likes which show the general public is ready for the change. The photo has gone so viral that it has also gained attention from LGBT people worldwide, showing their support and appreciation.
