Aleah Chapin is 29 years old and she has been painting since she was child and she is living in NY. Although Aleah Chapin is very young, she won the BP Portrait Award 2012 and Aleah Chapin’s first prize will be a victory in Aunties.
Aleah Chapin decided to paint old women that she has already known-her mother’s friends. And the project name was as The Aunties Project.
Aleah Chapin claims that “This work examines my personal history through the people who have shaped it. On our bodies is left a map of our journey through life. The process of painting these women allowed me a glimpse of that journey and brought me into the present moment of our shared history.”
Aleah Chapin had a lot of work on The Aunties Projects. Firstly she needed to persuade the old ladies to participate in the project. She spent so much time on them and Aleah Chapin took their photos in different perspectives.
Aleah Chapin said that ‘I’ve been obsessed with realism since I was a child. But I noticed that the subject has mainly been the idealized young, female nude. Although these paintings are undoubtedly beautiful, I wanted to see something that mirrored the world I saw around me. The Aunties Project is less about age and more about making paintings that fully embrace the real human body, this fascinating vessel that carries us through our experiences.’
The projects look like very personal however Aleah Chapin told that ‘Most women have issues and I’m not immune to that. We’re told that our bodies are supposed to be a ‘certain height, certain size, certain weight’. But the pictures we see are completely unrealistic; they’re very Photoshopped. We all know it when we look at them in magazines and yet, we still compare ourselves. That’s why we need images that show all sorts of bodies – so we can accept every size and shape.’
She said that in an invertiew ‘People have often asked me if I grew up in a nudest colony – which of course, I don’t blame them for thinking! But no, these women are not naked together very often. I asked them to pose and amazingly, they said yes. We’ve had several sessions where I get a group of them together outside and we take photos. It’s very much of a collaborative experience. I want to capture their reactions in the moment to me, each other and their surroundings. Life gives us an infinite outpouring of subtle emotions, physical manifestations of thought and experience that range from intense and dark, to hilarious and childlike. I want to make work that digs into all of this and everything in between.’
When I visualize a naked an old woman, I was feeling uncomfortable and I felt bad about that. However at first the film ‘Gloria’ had an outstandingly positive influence on my opinion about the old naked women bodies and now this project has, too. So I want to say thanks Aleah Chapin because of her projects, people may get used to see naked old woman and people may criticize themselves about the old age.
